They certainly don't follow her around, frightening her one moment and treating her like glass the next. And they certainly don't look exactly like the subject of her most violent drawing.

REVIEW: SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES BY RAY BRADBURY

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES
RAY BRADBURY
GENRE: HORROR

SYNOPSIS

The carnival rolls in sometime after midnight, ushering in Halloween a week early. The shrill siren song of a calliope beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two boys will discover the secret of its smoke, mazes, and mirrors; two friends who will soon know all too well the heavy cost of wishes. . .and the stuff of nightmare.

MY TAKE

Something Wicked This Way Comes was a very interesting read for me. I don't think I've ever read a book quite like this before (this is my first Bradbury novel).

The novel itself it beautifully written—at times, almost magical. Bradbury's prose is more along the lines of poetry at many points. This is a positive and also a negative. On the positive side, I think it adds an eeriness to the story. On the negative side, if you aren't used to reading this style of storytelling, it could very well hinder the story and cause disinterest. At first, I was put off by the poetic style. However, the more I read the more I began to enjoy it.

I love the “evil carnival comes to town” theme. I liked the main characters, two kids named Will and Jim. I loved the relationship Will has with his father.

As much as I liked this book, I couldn't give it 5 stars. I thought the ending was a bit, well, cheesy (for lack of a better word). But, even with that it was a really good novel and I enjoyed it tremendously.

Product Description:
Tyr and Loki are not your teenage sister's vampires.

They live for pleasure. They feel no remorse. They view human beings as livestock and sex objects. And after a thousand years seducing and murdering the prettiest girls in the room, they have become two of the most diabolical serial killers of all time.

But following a violent feud that separates the brothers for over a decade, Tyr hides himself away in a house on the outskirts of Las Vegas where he falls in love with a terminally ill young woman named Eva, an act deemed punishable by death by the fabled vampire council known as The Chosen.

When a mysterious messenger arrives at his home, Tyr fears both Loki and The Chosen have tracked him down, forcing him to protect both himself and the dying young woman who is teaching him to feel.

Thicker Than Water, the first novel in the Blood Brothers series, tells interconnected stories set one hundred years apart. Drawing inspiration from Norse mythology and the works of Shakespeare, the story weaves together vampires, brothel owners, cowboys, prostitutes, and gallons of innocent blood in an orgy of violence, sex, revenge, romance, betrayal, and brotherly love.

REVIEW: ON WRITING BY STEPHEN KING

ON WRITING
STEPHEN KING
GENRE: GUIDE/NONFICTION

SYNOPSIS

Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer's craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King's advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported near-fatal accident in 1999 -- and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery. Brilliantly structured, friendly and inspiring, "On Writing" will empower and entertain everyone who reads it -- fans, writers, and anyone who loves a great story well told.

MY TAKE

On Writing is not just for the aspiring writer—but for anyone who loves books and reading. This book will help the aspiring writer spot key issues in his/her work and how to address them. For the reader, it will make you appreciate the craft and the work (good) writers go through from beginning to end. Not only that, but this book will also help you spot those stories that aren't quite up-to-par (lazy writing, repetitiveness, lack of character development, useless words, etc...). This is not a step-by-step guide for aspiring writers (King makes this clear), but what works for Stephen King himself.

What I really liked about this book is that King not only discusses writing, but also key points of his life—which I found very interesting. He discusses his childhood and the beginning points of his writing, meeting his wife, the struggles of being an aspiring writer, selling his first novel (Carrie), drug abuse, and being hit by a van in 1999.

I found myself not wanting to put this book down until I was done (although I eventually had to due to lack of sleep). I practically hung on every word. I can pretty much guarantee I will never be able to attend a King seminar, or be able to interview him in person, so this book was the next best thing. It's written in a way that makes you feel as if you are listening to him speak right in front of you. On Writing is amazing stuff!

REVIEW: THE TRAVELING VAMPIRE SHOW BY RICHARD LAYMON

THE TRAVELING VAMPIRE SHOW
RICHARD LAYMON
GENRE: HORROR

SYNOPSIS

Though gloomy with clouds, it is a hot, August morning in the summer of 1963. All over the rural town of Grandville, tacked to power poles and trees, taped to store windows, blowing along the sidewalks, fliers have appeared announcing the mysterious one-night-only performance of The Traveling Vampire Show.

The show will feature Valeria, the only known vampire in captivity. According to the fliers, she is a gorgeous, stunning beauty. In the course of the performance, she will stalk volunteers from the audience, sink her teeth into their necks and drink their blood!

For three local teenagers who see the fliers, this is a show they don't want to miss.
But they may have to.
Though they can probably scrape up the price of admission, other obstacles stand in the way. One problem, nobody under 18 years of age is allowed into the show. Dwight, Rusty, and Slim are only 16. Another problem, the show begins at midnight and the three teens always have to be home by then. If that weren't bad enough, the show is to take place at Janks Field -- a desolate patch of ground with a nasty history -- that has been declared off limits by their parents

The situation appears hopeless.

Though Dwight and his friends fear they won't be able to attend the actual performance of the Traveling Vampire Show, they do have the entire day to themselves. Why not hike out to Janks Field and take a look around? With any luck, they might be able to watch the crew make preparations for tonight's performance. If they're really lucky, maybe they'll get a peek at Valeria, the gorgeous vampire.

And so the three friends set off on foot for Janks Field...

Dwight is a solid, honest kid, long on common sense and loyalty to his friends. He always tries to do what's right.

Rusty is a husky guy who relishes trouble.

Slim, their long-time pal, is the brains of the outfit, a voracious reader of novels, an aspiring writer, and a girl. Also, she is sometimes too brave for her own good.

The Traveling Vampire Show is the tale, told in Dwight's own words, of what happened to him, Rusty and Slim on that hot summer day they hiked to Janks Field. It's the story of their friendship and love, their temptations, their betrayals, and their courage as they went where they shouldn't go, did what they shouldn't do...and ran into big trouble.

MY TAKE

4 STARS!

The Traveling Vampire Show turned out to be a great read! I had to sit and debate with myself over whether to give this book 4 or 5 stars. I went with 4 stars because if it were worthy of 5, I shouldn't have had to think about it.

Anyways, the characterization in this novel is excellent. I really felt as if I got to know these three kids--Dwight, Rusty, and Slim. Dwight is the good, pretty much all American kid. Rusty is the little perv of the group. You know something is "off" with this kid pretty early on. As the book continues, you really see Rusty push the limits. Slim (female) is a little badass. I love the way she handles a bow and arrow. She's strong willed, brave, and really likeable. She and Dwight are smitten with each other as well.

The Traveling Vampire Show has come to town and some of the audience aren't going to make it out alive. The whole novel takes place in one day, so there is a lot happening to hold your interest. This is really a cool book and very highly recommended!

REVIEW: THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE BY SHIRLEY JACKSON

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE
SHIRLEY JACKSON
GENRE: HORROR

SYNOPSIS:

Past the rusted gates and untrimmed hedges, Hill House broods and waits...
Four seekers have come to the ugly, abandoned old mansion: Dr. Montague, and occult scholar looking for solid evidence of the psychic phenomenon called haunting; Theodora, his lovely and lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a lonely, homeless girl well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the adventurous future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable noises and self-closing doors, but Hill House is gathering its powers and will soon choose one of them to make its own...

MY TAKE

4 STARS!

The Haunting of Hill House has that old black & white (movie) feel to it. It's a classic haunted house tale. Scary? No, but enjoyable just the same.

There is a lot of character building within the first 100 pages of this 246 page novel. Dr. Montague, a paranormal expert, leases Hill House to prove the existence of a haunting. He enlists the help Theodora, Elenore, and Luke on his mission.

Theodora is an artist, outgoing, and maybe even a bit shallow. Luke is the heir to Hill House, and doesn't really take things too seriously. Elenore is an outcast and really has no life since her sick mother died. She really didn't have a life before then either because her life was devoted to taking care of her mother. She doesn't even really have a home to go back to.

After about a week in Hill House, Dr. Montague's wife shows up. This woman drove me crazy. She's annoying, demanding, and I wanted the house to eat her!

All of these different personalities work well together in this novel.

If you are looking for a good, classic haunted house novel, pick up this book. Be forewarned, this novel is very different from the movie.

Skylar Matthews just turned 18 when she started having unsettling dreams that were enough to wake her from deep slumber. Some of them were pleasant, others were disturbing, while the rest were downright dangerous.

The first of these dreams came on the eve of her birthday when she saw a strange boy with uncanny silver-grey eyes. She didn't expect to see him in person, nor did she expect that she would actually need to spend more time with him to save her life. Now numerous problems are plaguing her, and her entire world rattled the moment he stepped into town.

Adrien Fields wasn't exactly overjoyed at seeing her again, but as it turns out, he really doesn't have a choice in the matter. Now it seems like all he could do is blame the prophecy. He acts that out by irritating her most of the time and saving her life at other times, which thoroughly complicates her life.

This is his plan: Defy fate and rebel against the prophecy that links them both together. The only problem is will he be able to keep up with his nasty act and not start caring about her once he sees her again?

Editorial Review
Author Lisa Olsen kicks off a new series, this time about vampires, with Wake Me When the Sun Goes Down. Slightly geeky but loveable newbie vamp Anja made me want to give her a hug and a mug of O Positive, but Bishop from the secretive Order steps up to reluctantly show her the ropes when her Sire is MIA. You need a license to breed in the hidden vampire community and Anja must pretend to be someone she's not in order to save her pretty neck. Throw in Centuries old Aleksandr who is charmed by Anja's mix of strength and naiveté and the mysterious Sire who abandoned her, and there are a lot of questions to unravel! While the story wraps up with a satisfying end, there are definitely plenty of stones left unturned for the rest of the series and I eagerly await the sequel.

Product Description
"It was ironic that this happened to me; I was never a night person at heart. So you can see right off the bat why a vampire was the very last thing I would have chosen to be."

Anja Evans wakes up in the morgue with a hell of a hangover. It takes almost eating her best friend before she figures out... she's a vampire. When a dark and dangerous vampire shows up at her door asking to see her license and registration, Anja assumes Bishop is a regular cop. But breeding among vampires is strictly controlled, and her unlicensed status makes her an enemy of The Order. Struggling to find a balance between her former life and her undead one, Anja tries to blend school and living up to her new identity, all while searching to find the elusive Viking, whose blood gave Anja the strength of a vampire hundreds of years old.

REVIEW: COME CLOSER BY SARA GRAN

COME CLOSER
SARA GRAN
GENRE: HORROR

SYNOPSIS:

From the author of Saturn’s Return to New York comes this dark psychological thriller.

"‘What we think is impos-sible happens all the time.’ So claims the beguiling narrator of Come Closer, and after reading this spare and menacing tale, the reader has to agree. Sara Gran has created a sly, satisfying (fast!) novel of one young woman possessed not only by a demon but also by her own secret desires."—Stewart O’Nan.

MY TAKE

4 STARS!

Come Closer is a really great, fast read. The book itself is only 168 pages.

The main character is Amanda. She's a happily married architect whom slowly becomes possessed by a demon. This book spans about a year of Amanda's life from the beginning of the possession. Amanda's whole world slowly begins to change. She's changing, and with this change comes destruction of herself and the people around her. Others have said this book is really scary, but I didn't find it to be so. It was, however really entertaining.

I found this book well-written and really enjoyed the fast pace of it. There wasn't bunch of unnecessary details to drag the story down. I definitely recommend this book for a quick entertaining read!

REVIEW: CARRIE BY STEPHEN KING

CARRIE
STEPHEN KING
GENRE: HORROR

SYNOPSIS:

A modern classic, "Carrie" introduced a distinctive new voice in American fiction -- Stephen King. The story of misunderstood high school girl Carrie White, her extraordinary telekinetic powers, and her violent rampage of revenge, remains one of the most barrier-breaking and shocking novels of all time.
Make a date with terror and live the nightmare that is..."Carrie".

MY TAKE

5 STARS!

After reading Carrie, King's first published novel, there is no doubt why Stephen King rose to be one of the top authors in the horror genre.

Carrie is not a huge novel, in fact it's a pretty quick read. This book is the tale of Carrie White, a girl that has been bullied and torn down at every turn by her overly religious mother and her fellow classmates. Carrie is also telekinetic (TK). A person can only take so much before finally breaking, and boy do we get to see Carrie break--and the whole town pays. What I think makes this book really work is if you take the TK out, you have a very REAL story.

We know from the very start that the story has a very bad ending. Throughout the story, there are snippets and excerpts from court documents, interviews with survivors, etc.. This really builds up the excitement to the final moment when all hell breaks loose.

Even non-horror fans can enjoy Carrie. Get this book and read it!!

Product Description:
(See the promotional video on Author's Page.) In this sweeping historical novel of 17th century France, the wrath and power of Louis XIV are felt all the way to Keltic Brittany near the Bay of the Dead.

Born into the peasant culture, a mixture of ancient pagan beliefs mixed with Catholicism, is the girl Anna, a bastard looking like no one in her parish - her mother would not tell who her father was. Taught the use of herbs by the women of her family, she also has the gift of healing - a power also attributed to French and English kings who were said to heal scrofula with their touch. This ability will cause one man, a physician, to attempt to use her for his own glorification, and another, a Jesuit, to work to send her to a fiery death.

But first, she is caught up in the Breton peasant rebellion of 1675, when a people rose up against the punishing taxes of the French king and local nobles after years of hunger and failed crops. It is the consequence of the violence and retribution by the French that set the wheels of her destiny in motion.

After learning first-hand about her healing touch, a young physician, Luc de St. Connec, purchases Anna her from her family and carries her to the chateau of a relative on the French border. To conceal his motive, he creates a new identity for her -- she is his cousin Anne de St. Nolf, stolen away by her peasant nurse as an infant and in need of being taught French and the graces that accompany her birthright. At the chateau she becomes the companion of Marie Angélique de Scoraille, the demoiselle Fontanges, destined to become Louis XIV's last and tragically short-lived mistress. But Anne has a secret Luc has yet to discover, which will change him from her exploiter to her protector.

Paris and the court of Monsieur, brother to the King, beckon. To gain an appointment at court, St. Connec abjures his Huguenot religion and embraces Catholicism, an act of conscience he will later regret as the King, edict by edict, suppresses the freedom to practice Protestantism in France. In Paris, St. Connec renews his friendship with the English diplomat and spy John Keyes, who he'd met in Brittany and knows of Anne's origin. Their friendship is challenged by their growing love for Anne, a love they deny to each other and to themselves.

In 1680, the Affair of Poisons takes Paris by storm, and during a three-year period many are tried as blasphemers and poisoners (with the implicit understanding that they are also witches). Many are burned at the stake. The poison investigations implicate the King's longtime mistress, Madame de Montespan, mother of five of his children. Assisted in conspiracy by the lieutenant-general of the Paris police, Louis XIV begins one of the great cover-ups of French history, determined that no word of La Montespan's possible involvement will leak out to make him an object of ridicule or to endanger her. Anne is implicated in the affair of poisons, endangering herself and the men who love her.

Researched and written over an eight-year period, the author commented. "I like to think that one can learn history from my novels, and enjoy a good yarn at the same time. Peasants weren't dullards. We're all descended from peasants if we go back far enough. Theirs was an oral culture, full of colorful language, practical knowledge, myth and superstition. The aristocracy of France wasn't above superstition itself."

This is a long story, so if you are a reader who likes to submerse yourself for days into a different time and place, observe historical figures in their proper milieu like a ghost at a banquet, and follow the destinies of charming, romantic, ambitious, but flawed characters during a time of French splendor and court intrigue, religious persecution, conspicuous consumption, assassination, torture and fiery executions, brandings and life sentences as galley slaves, you will enjoy this novel.
