REVIEW: BEWARE THE NIGHT BY A. KALE

BEWARE THE NIGHT
A. KALE
GENRE: YA/HORROR

SYNOPSIS:

A New Kid In Town. A Demented Gang of Bullies. An Ancient Evil. The City of Crofton Is About To Face Its Worst Nightmare...

Adam and his father, the enigmatic Dr. Alfred Novello, arrive at the small city of Crofton, looking for a fresh start after the death of Adam's mother. But soon, Adam meets a troubled kid named Macs (pronounced Max), who drags Adam into a terrible nightmare of ancient evil.

To make matters worse, Adam and his new friend attract the attention of a vicious gang of bullies who call themselves "The Ghosts", and who want Adam dead!

With his father wallowing in his own grief, Adam and Macs have no one to turn to for help against the evil they are about to face, an evil that has been waiting for centuries to tear Crofton apart...

MY RATING: 3 STARS

Beware the Night is a YA-driven, horror novella perfect for tweens looking to read something a bit on the scary side. The story is mysterious and interesting and will keep the younger audience reading and enjoying. The “monsters” in this story are unique, which is a plus. I also felt the pacing of this story was on-point.

On the technical side, there were a few problems, which is why I had to give Beware the Night 3 stars instead of 4. There seemed to be some occasional missing periods and misspellings (“fate” instead of “fat”). I believe the dialog was a bit off-putting and could have been a bit more realistic if more contractions would have been used, especially within the dialog for Adam and Macs.

Overall, I did find Beware the Night to be an interesting story that I enjoyed reading. I could very well see tweens loving this story.

REVIEW: RENEGADE BY ERICA STEVENS

RENEGADE
CAPTIVE #2
ERICA STEVENS
GENRE: YA/PARANORMAL ROMANCE

SYNOPSIS:

Though she is free of the palace, rescued from her position as a blood slave, Aria is haunted by the memories of her time spent within the fortress, tormented by memories of Braith, the prince that betrayed her and shattered her heart. Every day is a struggle to get through, and the only solace she is able to find is with Max, her best friend, and fellow captive. Though Max does not understand her bond to Braith, he knows some of what she endured, and helps to ease some of the tattered pieces of her soul. Aria slowly begins to salvage the broken parts of her wounded spirit by throwing herself into the wonder of the woods she had so greatly missed, and the secure and reassuring love that Max freely gives her. Her world is thrown into a tailspin again though when a marauding group of vampires destroy the caves she had found temporary shelter in. Scattered about the forest, seeking to stay hidden and find her family, Aria is stunned when Braith, the monster that savaged her heart, reappears. Stunned by his sudden arrival in her world, Arianna is uncertain if he has come to recapture her, or to kill her for daring to escape.

MY RATING: 2.5 STARS

Renegade is the sequel to Captured. I really liked the first book, this one not so much. It just didn't have that special something that caught my attention with the first book.

It seems that Renegade faltered due to lack of detail, action, etc... even the relationship between Braith and Aria didn't work for me in this one. I have higher hopes for Refugee, the third book in this four-book series.

There was some useful information revealed in this book that helps set up the next book regarding the circumstances behind Braith's mother's death. I also liked the cover art for this book better than the first.

MY FAVORITE THINGS POST #2

So this is a new thing I've started posting on Book Hollow once a month. I'll be posting random things (old and new) that I love and just things I think are worth mentioning.

HOT TAMALES

Yum...just yum! Give me a box of Hot Tamales and I'll be a very happy woman—well, until the box is empty. I usually buy a box during the week and stash them away. These fiery candies make the perfect reading snack. Chocolate is nice, but I need something with a little more kick.

CASHMERE SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

I've put my hair through hell over the years. Dye jobs, blow drying, not to mention just getting older, has starved my hair of moisture and shine. While getting my hair cut, the stylist suggested I try the Regis line of Cashmere. Oh. My. God. I love this stuff! Not only does it smell beyond wonderful, but it works miracles on dry damaged hair. I have never loved a brand of shampoo and conditioner as much as I do Cashmere. It is simply amazing!

THE CROW

The Crow is my number 1 favorite movie of all time. Okay, I'll admit it's mostly because Brandon Lee stars in it (~swoon~), but I also love the story itself. The sequels to this movie should have NEVER been made. They were awful! Honestly, I think Brandon made this movie. If anyone else had been cast to play Eric Draven, it probably wouldn't have worked as well as it did.

On the flip side, the working conditions while shooting this movie were horrible. It seemed like one bad thing after another happened on set. One of which tragically ended the promising life of Brandon Lee.

My two favorite quotes from the movie:

Little things used to mean so much to Shelly. I used to think they were kind of trivial... believe me, nothing is trivial.
Eric Draven

Suddenly, I heard a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door...you heard me rapping, right?
Eric Draven

BATH & BODY WORKS

I love this store and probably own more of their products than should be allowed.

THRIFTBOOKS.COM

I owe my ever growing library to this website. I can find just about anything through thriftbooks, especially out-of-print books. My nearest used book store is 30 miles away and really isn't that cheap. Thriftbooks has a very wide selection and the shipping is FREE! Most of the books are $3.95. You just can't get a better deal unless you are searching through a garage sale. I've ordered tons of books through this site and it usually takes about a week to receive my order.

Okay, that wraps up post #2 of My Favorite Things. I've got to get to thinking about what I want to include for next month :)

REVIEW: AMERICAN GHOUL BY WALT MORTON

AMERICAN GHOUL
WALT MORTON
GENRE: HORROR

SYNOPSIS: Seventeen-year-old Howard Pickman has some unusual problems: He comes from a family of ghouls with a long history of digging up corpses, and he’s just moved to a new school filled with kids that are scarier than he is. American Ghoul is the story of an exceptionally odd teenager trying to survive the most terrible time anybody has to go through -- senior year at high school.

MY RATING: 5 STARS

American Ghoul was a very interesting story with memorable, well-written characters.

Normally, when I think about a ghoul, I think of a dirty, nasty creature that ravages cemeteries to pick the bones of the dead. Howard and his family are ghouls, but not in the traditional sense. They rob graves occasionally to have what they call a Harvest once a month to get the nutrients, hormones, etc...that ghouls aren't born with. Without the Harvest they would become very sick and possibly die. To look at Howard and his family, you would never know they were ghouls. They are just as human as everyone else.

There is so much more to this story than just the ghoul aspect. Due to some terrible circumstances, Howard has to go live with his grandmother. This brings a whole new set of problems and situations that Howard has to work through. I really liked his grandmother. She's a little crazy and quirky, and the same could be said for the new friends Howard makes.

Having ghouls in a story, you know there is going to be some gore. Honestly, it's lite gore and nothing too stomach-churning. I would categorize this story as lite horror.

Overall, I really liked this story. It was well-written with believable characters. It kept my interest until the very end. You can get a copy of American Ghoul by clicking the Amazon link below.

*American Ghoul was provided to me by the author free of charge.

WHAT'S NEW ON MY KINDLE THIS WEEK

Here's a quick rundown about what I've downloaded this week on my Kindle.

WARM BODIES

Not just another zombie novel, Warm Bodies is funny, scary, and deeply moving.

REVIEW: EASY BY TAMMARA WEBBER

EASY
TAMMARA WEBBER
GENRE: YA ROMANCE

SYNOPSIS:

Rescued by a stranger.
Haunted by a secret

The attraction between them was undeniable. Yet the past he’d worked so hard to overcome, and the future she’d put so much faith in, threatened to tear them apart.

Only together could they fight the pain and guilt, face the truth—and find the unexpected power of love.

MY RATING: 3 STARS

After seeing some of the raving reviews for Easy, I felt it might be something that I would really enjoy so I ordered a copy. I did enjoy this book, but I didn't love it as so many others readers did.

I really can't explain what was so off about this book to me because I don't really know. I just can't exactly put my finger on it. I guess just overall (characters, storyline, writing) just didn't reach out and grab me.

One thing I will say is that I read Easy the same week I read Colleen Hoover's Slammed, and I absolutely LOVED that book. I think that maybe I would have liked Easy more if I wouldn't have read those two books in the same week.

Although I didn't love Easy, it was an enjoyable story and I will definitely read more of Webber's books in the future.
