REVIEW: WARM BODIES BY ISAAC MARION

WARM BODIES
WARM BODIES #1
ISAAC MARION
GENRE: PARANORMAL ROMANCE

SYNOPSIS:

'R' is a zombie. He has no name, no memories and no pulse, but he has dreams. He is a little different from his fellow Dead.

Amongst the ruins of an abandoned city, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows - warm and bright and very much alive, she is a blast of colour in a dreary grey landscape. For reasons he can't understand, R chooses to save Julie instead of eating her, and a tense yet strangely tender relationship begins.

This has never happened before. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won't be changed without a fight...

MY RATING: 4 STARS

I found Warm Bodies to be highly entertaining. This is such a different and refreshing zombie novel. The zombies in this book are nothing like the zombies we are used to seeing. It's always nice to see an author take a old idea and put a new spin on it. At many times, this book it comical, but in the appropriate places and never overdone.

One thing I noticed (at Goodreads) some readers are shelving this book within the horror genre. This is NOT a horror novel. I can only assume it is because of the subject matter of zombies, but that still does not make it horror. There was not one point in this book that resembles horror to me. It's more along the lines of a paranormal romance story.

The characters are very well written and evolve slowly throughout the book. This made the story believable and the characters likeable. I really loved the memories shared with Perry.

Overall, I really liked this story and would highly recommend it to others. I can't wait to see the movie version of this story.

A statue. A letter. A secret.

And only one thing's certain . . .
A Murder.

MY RATING: 3 STARS

This is a really hard review to write because I really like the story and characters, but the editing hindered the story greatly. This is going to be one of those reviews where I have to do “The Good/The Bad”. Lets get “The Bad” out of the way first so I can at least end on a good note.

The Bad:

If it weren't for the fact that I love the characters and the story, I would've gave this book 2 stars due to the poor proofreading. There was a mistake on almost every other page. It really bothers me when I see such potential in a story, to only have to down grade my rating because of errors that could have easily been caught and fixed. I really, really hope when the author gets time, she will go back through this book and fix the errors and release a new edition of this Kindle story so the rating doesn't affect her sales...because it is a good story—really! The first book had some editing issues, but it was nothing compared to the errors with this one.

With the introduction of Charlie in this first book, I knew I'd see more of him in the second book as a love interest for Calise. I was excited to see how this would play out. There was only one thing about Charlie that bothered me—he kept calling Calise “Girl”. That drove me nuts. Tre some times uses the word “Girl” instead of the name of the female he's talking to, and it doesn't bother me at all. It sounds right coming from Tre, but not from Charlie. His use of the word “Girl” should've been limited to only a couple of times.

I wanted to see Chris more in this book. He is a huge part of the story, and I sort of missed him in this book. He was more of a background character. I needed more Chris!

Some of the scene transitions were a little bit confusing. The characters will be doing on thing, or be in one place, then suddenly they are somewhere else, or doing something different.

The Good:

I really like the overall story and the characters. I love the whole “forbidden love” thing between Calise and Chris. All the characters have their own personalities and they work well together. Calise is starting to evolve as a character as she starts figuring out exactly who she is. I also liked how she is willing to sacrifice her spot on the most wanted team to help Tre.

Calise is getting closer to figuring out what happened to Jennifer. I have an idea of what I think happened to her, whether I'm right or not I won't find out until the next book. So the disappearance of the missing spade, Jennifer, is still ongoing through this book.

It seems that Blue and Kevin are warming up to Calise a bit more in this book. I think in the next book Blue and Calise might even become friends. Of course, that's just speculation on my part.

Even with the technical problems this book has, I'm still looking forward to the next installment of the Spades series. I really like the story and the characters and want to see where the next book takes them.

REVIEW: SPADES BY KRISTY EVANS

SPADES
SPADES #1
KRISTY EVANS
GENRE: PARANORMAL ROMANCE

SYNOPSIS:

17-year-old Calise Thomas grieves her mother's death. As she trains with Chris and his friends at a cabin in the woods, she realizes why they live in the forest - to hide their identities and profession. With each of them wearing a spade tattoo, she tries to investigate the purpose behind the mysterious mark. At the same time, her attraction for Chris heats up and things get sidetracked when she feels like she's being watched. Something unseen and heavy is in their midst, but no one acknowledges the foul, unsettling presence that grips the air. Instead, they take on their secret profession, leaving Calise to figure out who she is and what she's capable of.

MY RATING: 4 STARS

I really enjoyed Spades by Kristy Evans. I think the characters were well thought out and executed rather well. The story was interesting and kept me reading. The only beef I had with this book was the cliffhanger. I was so into this story and then it just abruptly ended. The good news is the second book is available so you can easily purchase it and keep reading.

I think Chris's character was very mysterious and interesting. There were more questions raised with his character instead of answered in this book. At this point, there isn't much romance going on between he and Calise. Whether there even will be isn't certain. I guess I will have to move on to the second book to find out...and I desperately NEED to know!

I like the main character, Calise. Her mother has died, and her father has moved on with a new woman—a woman Calise can't stand. Calise feels as all hope has been lost and just desperately wants to end it all and be with her mother again. Her attempt at suicide failed when Chris found and saved her. He brings her into his super secret world, now it's up to Calise to find the courage and strength to belong.

Chris's friends and co-workers are Tre, Kevin, and Blue. Tre is a fun character, Kevin is kind of indifferent at this point, and Blue is a huffy mean girl. Their personalities are all different therefore they all work really well together in this story.

Overall, I really liked Spades and have already purchased the second book. I absolutely recommend this story if you are a fan of paranormal romance. Right now, Spades book 1 is free on Amazon. Follow the link below to download Spades.

REVIEW: RENEGADE BY ERICA STEVENS

RENEGADE
CAPTIVE #2
ERICA STEVENS
GENRE: YA/PARANORMAL ROMANCE

SYNOPSIS:

Though she is free of the palace, rescued from her position as a blood slave, Aria is haunted by the memories of her time spent within the fortress, tormented by memories of Braith, the prince that betrayed her and shattered her heart. Every day is a struggle to get through, and the only solace she is able to find is with Max, her best friend, and fellow captive. Though Max does not understand her bond to Braith, he knows some of what she endured, and helps to ease some of the tattered pieces of her soul. Aria slowly begins to salvage the broken parts of her wounded spirit by throwing herself into the wonder of the woods she had so greatly missed, and the secure and reassuring love that Max freely gives her. Her world is thrown into a tailspin again though when a marauding group of vampires destroy the caves she had found temporary shelter in. Scattered about the forest, seeking to stay hidden and find her family, Aria is stunned when Braith, the monster that savaged her heart, reappears. Stunned by his sudden arrival in her world, Arianna is uncertain if he has come to recapture her, or to kill her for daring to escape.

MY RATING: 2.5 STARS

Renegade is the sequel to Captured. I really liked the first book, this one not so much. It just didn't have that special something that caught my attention with the first book.

It seems that Renegade faltered due to lack of detail, action, etc... even the relationship between Braith and Aria didn't work for me in this one. I have higher hopes for Refugee, the third book in this four-book series.

There was some useful information revealed in this book that helps set up the next book regarding the circumstances behind Braith's mother's death. I also liked the cover art for this book better than the first.

REVIEW: THE VAMPIRE SHRINK BY LYNDA HILBURN

THE VAMPIRE SHRINK
KISMET KNIGHT, PH.D., VAMPIRE PSYCHOLOGIST 1
LYNDA HILBURN
GENRE: UF/ PARANORMAL ROMANCE

The Kindle version of The Vampire Shrink is the British edition, published by Quercus/Jo Fletcher Books, UK. It contains British spelling, punctuation, etc.

Kismet Knight is a young psychologist with a growing clinical practice, and she's always looking for something to give her the edge in her chosen career. When her new client turns out to be a Goth teenager who desperately wants to become a vampire, Kismet is inspired to become the vampire shrink, offering her services to people who believe they are undead. Kismet herself, as a scientist, knows it's hokum, but she's looking at it in a purely psychoanalytic light, already imagining the papers she's going to write on this strange subculture.

That's until she meets the leader of a vampire coven, a sexy, mysterious man who claims to be a powerful 800-year-old vampire, and she is pulled into a whirlwind of inexplicable events that start her questioning everything she once believed about the paranormal.

MY RATING: 3.5 STARS

After finishing The Vampire Shrink, I'm left with mixed emotions about this book. I like the whole concept because it's a bit different. However, I felt the main characters (especially the character of Devereux) didn't evolve through the story enough.

The second book is available, but I haven't read it yet. It's possible that Dev is more hashed out in the second book. I hope that's the case, because I couldn't really connect with him in this book. I felt more connected to the hunky FBI agent, Alan.

Kismet is somewhat confusing. She stayed in denial way too long about the existence of vampires even when it was staring her right in the face...literally (Bryce lol). I liked her well enough though. She has three potential love interests in this book—Tom (her ex), Alan (FBI agent), and Dev (800 year old vamp). Yeah, I was rooting for Alan because I felt more connected to him than Dev. I shouldn't even really count Tom because he's an egotistical ass.

Overall, I did like the story and will read the next book, Blood Therapy. I think this story was well deserving of 3.5 stars, but I'd give the cover art 2 stars. I just didn't care for it.

REVIEW: HALLOW'S WEEN BY REX JAMESON

HALLOW'S WEEN
REX JAMESON
GENRE: YA

SYNOPSIS

Talented teenage witch Chloe Hallow seeks the heart of the love of her life, but when her attempts at a normal conversation fail, she falls back on what she knows best: alchemy. The resulting spell leaves an indelible stain on the small magical community of Squirrel Hill, but every year, her enduring legacy touches the world.

MY TAKE

4 STARS

Hallow's Ween was a short and fun story to read. During the prologue, the author leads you to believe that this story is more of a non fictional work along the lines of a fable that he's modernized about the true origin of Halloween. For those that don't realize this, it could be a bit misleading.

The story itself was a fun, quick read for me. Chloe desperately seeks the attention of a boy named Jacob. So much so, she decides to make (what she thinks) is a sort of love potion. Needless to say, it goes horribly wrong. Because this is modernized fable of course there is a moral—be careful what you ask for because you just might get it. You know it's going to end badly.

On a side note, I'm not crazy about the cover art.

REVIEW: SEEKING SPIRITS

SEEKING SPIRITS: THE LOST CASES OF THE ATLANTIC PARANORMAL SOCIETY
JASON HAWES, GRANT WILSON & MICHAEL JAN FREIDMAN
GENRE: PARANORMAL/NON FICTION

SYNOPSIS

TV's POPULAR GHOST HUNTERS REVEAL ALL-NEW, NEVER-BEFORE-TOLD STORIES FROM THEIR SPOOKY EARLY INVESTIGATIONS!
For the first time ever, Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, founders of The Atlantic Paranormal Society (T.A.P.S.), share their most memorable and spine-tingling early cases -- none of which has ever appeared on television. Beginning with the previously untold experiences that sparked their passion for ghost hunting, Jason and Grant's bone-chilling investigations uncover:
A Connecticut woman who seems to exist in two places at once

A little girl whose invisible playmate retaliates
against her father's punishments

A man overcome by an evil entity as Jason and Grant survey his home

A distraught woman who dreams of paranormal events
before she experiences them...and much more!
Jason and Grant didn't always have the fancy scientific equipment and experienced team that fans now watch on their smash-hit television show. As they share their hair-raising first experiences, they offer essential tips for budding paranormal investigators -- including how to use an electromagnetic field (EMF) meter and an infrared camera, determine if a supernatural phenomenon is good or evil, and deal with spirits. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, these fascinating and frightening true stories will keep you up at night!

MY TAKE

4 STARS

I might as well go ahead and admit it—I'm a huge fan of Ghost Hunters and also the spin-off Ghost Hunters International. Both shows are entertaining and I adore the personalities of the ghost hunters themselves. However, within the same breath, I'm also a skeptic. I don't believe everything I see or hear on the shows.

This book, Seeking Spirits, is about the cases Jason and Grant investigated before they landed on television. The cases are broken down into chronological order according to year. In between cases there are sections thrown in devoted to explaining certain types of hauntings, devices, etc., to elaborate. The cases themselves range from the believable to unbelievable to just plain crazy.

Many of the cases in this book resulted in unexplained EVPs, noises, and the occasional shadow sighting. We see these types of cases a lot on the show. There were a couple of cases covered in this book that just seemed too “out there” for me. Take for instance the case entitled Pots & Pans. In 1997, a man named Tim claimed that his furniture would get rearranged and his pots and pans would be stacked in the floor by an unknown force. During the investigation Jason and Grant witnessed the claims first hand. They concluded that an “elemental” was responsible.

Another case I found totally blown away with was the case of the doppelganger. In 2001, Jason and Grant got a call from a man that said he was concerned about his wife. He claimed that he would have conversations with his wife, then later his wife would account they had no such conversation. This doesn't seem very paranormal sounding does it? Well, the situation started to become worse for the man and his wife and he decided that he needed someone to come in and investigate his claims and get to the bottom of what was happening. According to Jason and Grant, there was a doppelganger impersonating the wife. I still can't seem to wrap my head around that one.

Another case worth mentioning was an instance of a little old lady contacting T.A.P.S because she was hearing voices. Jason and Grant arrive and start conducting their interview with the lady. She was sweet and even brought them cookies and milk to snack on. At one point she goes to the kitchen to come back a minute later wielding a frying pan ready to conk both investigators on the head! The little old lady wasn't being affected by a haunting, instead she was found to have dementia.

I was thoroughly entertained by this book even though a few of the cases seemed a bit far-fetched.

REVIEW: BLOOD CALLING

BLOOD CALLING
BLOOD CALLING #1
JOSHUA GROVER-DAVID PATTERSON
GENRE: YA/PARANORMAL

SYNOPSIS

When Lucy Leary turned 18, her life fell apart. She crashed her car, her best friend abandoned her, her parents divorced, and her grandfather passed away, leaving her a single possession: A vampire slaying kit with a note that said, “THEY’RE REAL. FIGHT THEM.”

Now Lucy must stop the oldest, most dangerous vampire in history, before it can kill her family.

MY TAKE

4 STARS

Blood Calling is aimed toward the YA audience, but that doesn't make it any less entertaining for adults. This story takes a very different stance on the overly-done vampire story.

This story is told as if Lucy (the main character) is sitting across the table from you—like an autobiography so-to-speak. There are many that hate stories written this way, but I found it refreshing and enjoyed it.

I found Lucy to be a well-fleshed out character that I truly enjoyed reading about. She has become somewhat of a pariah at her school after a drunk driving accident. Her home life isn't much better either. Her parents have divorced and they basically ignore her. As a result of her drunk driving she is sentenced to serve community service at a homeless shelter—where she meets her first vampire...then she tries to kill him.

What I really like about this story is how the vampires are portrayed with a very different and unique twist. I don't want to ruin the story for potential readers, but I will say this—these vampires are saviors of the nearly dead.

Overall, this was a very entertaining and unique story that I highly recommend.

MY TAKE

4 STARS

I was pleasantly surprised by Edge of Shadows. It held my attention easily, which is really saying something (I swear sometimes it feels like I have A.D.D.).

The opening chapter starts out strong with Ellie packing up to leave her husband Jake. It's obvious he has an explosive temper when he pushes her and causes her to gash her head open. He's got a drinking problem, but it becomes clear that the drinking is a result of far deeper problems.

During most of the book I was trying to unravel the mysteries that plagued Ellie, Jake, and even this mysterious “Linda” that is introduced. It's evident there is something going on with this lady but you can't quite put your finger on it.

When I started this book, I did realize it was part of a series, so I expected the ending to be somewhat open, and expected it to leave me with questions. I got exactly what I expected. I have a lot of questions left to be answered with the ending of this book. As a matter of fact, I had one of those “Oh, WTF did she do!?” moments.

All in all, Edge of Shadows was a pretty good read. I will be purchasing the next book, Shadows Deep, in hopes of getting some of those answers I was left with at the end of this book.

MY TAKE

Amanda Ashley's Bound by Blood is the sequel to Bound by Night. I actually liked this book better than Bound by Night. I liked the characters better and it just seemed to flow better than the first book.

Between the two books, twenty years has passed. Drake and Elena's daughter, Kaitlyn (half vampire, half mortal) has grown up. Her love interest in this book is Zack. He's a casino owner and is also one of the forbidden “Other” vampires.

There were a couple of moments in the book I thought could have been done a bit different, but overall I really did like Bound by Blood.

REVIEW: ZOMBIFIED BY LYRA MCKEN

ZOMBIFIED
LYRA MCKEN
GENRE: YA/PARANORMAL

SYNOPSIS

Cassie is a typical teenager. She’s crushing on a boy and trying to make it through high school. It’s a typical day of classes when all hell breaks loose. Forced to run and hide the situation just keeps getting worse. She makes a mistake and soon becomes infected. She meets others like her and together they sent out to find a cure. Is their fate already sealed? Can they find a cure before it’s too late? See what happens through the eyes of the infected when Cassie tells you how Zombies are people too.

MY TAKE

4 STARS

When I read the prologue I honestly thought I wasn't going to like this book. I was wrong—I did end up liking it. Zombified is a novella, and a very quick read. You won't want to put it down until the end. I read it in a matter of a couple of hours.

The story is told from the main character's (Cassie's) point of view. Cassie manages to get herself bitten during a zombie attack at her high school. The story follows Cassie throughout her “turn” into a zombie. I think this is the part of the story I like most. Usually zombie-type stories are about the people who are running from the zombies.

I found this story entertaining with likable characters. The only thing that I would suggest is for the author to trash the prologue. A prologue sets the tone of the story to be told and I don't think the prologue of this book adds to the story, if anything is detracts from it.

REVIEW: LIVE UNDEAD BY STEVE WARREN

LIVE UNDEAD
STEVE WARREN
GENRE: HORROR

SYNOPSIS

Live Undead tour the country, bringing their blood-slicked shock rock to out of the way dives and underground clubs. Their obsessed fans follow them from city to city, unaware of the band's horrifying secret. The lacerated throats and acts of self-mutilation isn't simply makeup and effects – it's all real. The members of Live Undead are vampires. They prey on the black-clad, disaffected, and depressed teenagers who flock to their shows, while leaving a trail of dead bodies in their wake.

Depressed, sexually confused, and bullied at school, Nothing desperately longs for escape. He dreams of rock and roll stardom and thousands of adoring fans, but will settle with knowing what it's like to be special. That's the question he needs answered when he finally gets his chance to meet Live Undead.

Eric's life has been in a downward spiral ever since his pregnant girlfriend went missing thirteen years ago after a concert. When Eric stumbles across Live Undead, he's shocked by their uncanny resemblance to the band that had played the night his life changed forever.

Inspired by splatterpunk novels of the late 1980s and early 1990s, LIVE UNDEAD contains depictions of explicit sex, gruesome horror and graphic violence. Reader discretion is advised.

MY TAKE

3 STARS

This book is definitely not for the squeamish, as a matter of fact, it is layered in gore. I don't think I was quite prepared for how much gore and explicit content this book entailed. Truth be told, I didn't read the whole synopsis before downloading this book. I pretty much thought Oh rocker vamps, kinda cool, maybe like Anne Rice's Lestat when he came back and started a heavy metal band. I couldn't have been more wrong! Live Undead is more along the lines of sex (male/male), drugs, heavy metal, and a lot (I do mean a lot!) of gore.

The storyline did pull me in and I had to keep reading even though some of the scenes were brutal. I wanted to know more about the character in the story that re-named himself Nothing. The ending left something to be desired though. I would have gave this book 2 ½ stars, but I ended up giving it 3 because it did keep me reading all the way to the end despite the fact of some of the gruesome scenes.

REVIEW: GRAVE'S END BY ELAINE MERCADO

GRAVE'S END: A TRUE GHOST STORY
ELAINE MERCADO
GENRE: PARANORMAL/NONFICTION

SYNOPSIS

When Elaine Mercado and her first husband bought their home in Brooklin, New York, in 1982, they had no idea that they and their youg daughters were embarking on a thirteen year nightmare.

Within a few days of moving in, Elaine and her older daughter began to experience the sensation of being watched. Then came scratching moises and weird smells, followed by voices whispering, maniacal laughter, shadowy figures scurrying along baseboards, and small balls of light bouncing along the ceilings. From the beginning of the haunting, "suffocating dreams" were experienced by everyone except the younger daughter These eventually accelerated to physical aggression directed at Elaine and both the girls.

This book is the true story of how one family tried to cope with living in a haunted house. It also describes how, with the help of a parapsychologist Dr. Hans Holtzer and the medium Marisa Anderson, the family discovered the tragic and heartbreaking secrets buried in the house at Grave's End.

MY TAKE

3 STARS

This book is written from the point of view of the author, Elaine Mercado. Grave's End tells her real-life experience of a haunting that ruled her and her family's life for many years. It was interesting to read about the disturbances this family experience in their home. I have always found it interesting to read first-hand experiences of the paranormal.

Mercado stresses over and over throughout the book how terrified she was during the times of frequent paranormal activity happening in the home followed by periods of normalcy. It's obvious that it was affecting not only her, but her children as well. I was astounded by how long it actually took for this family to seek out help or even research their home—we are talking years and years of living in fear.

I don't know if I much cared for the solution of bringing a “medium” into the home. I'm a bit on the fence when people start calling themselves a medium. I can buy the fact that some people are more sensitive to the “Other Side”, but people who call themselves mediums and claim to speak directly (and have conversations) with ghosts not so much.

I do believe this book could have been better written had Mercado teamed up with an established author to write this book. Nonetheless, I did find it to be interesting. I would recommend this book to readers who like to read about first-hand paranormal activity such as myself. If you find yourself in the category, you might like to check out some books written by Jeff Belanger.
